Ok so at two we were in the dinosaur phase, at two and a half we entered the Disney Princess phase and now added to that we have just entered the baby phase. Every day I pick Honey up from school we have the exact same conversation. Me - "Hi darling did you have a nice time at school? What did you do today?" Honey - "I played with babies." That's it. Every. Single. Day. Which is a little more info than before, "I played with toys" (no sh*t Sherlock) which I've had every previous day.

Anyway, babies, I have vivid memories of my mum buying me my first baby. I must have been about four, we got all dressed up, and just the two of us went into Brighton for the day, we must have ditched my brother somewhere. I specifically remember begging my mum for a lovely baby with long hair, not very realistic obviously, and my mum explaining babies do not have long hair so why don't I chose a more realistic baby. I probably had a huge screaming tantrum because I left the shop with a baby with knee length hair. Anyway, in this vein, and since Honey has become obsessed with babies (and ramming them up my top so I have a baby in my tummy), I decided to buy her a nice doll with long hair. Big mistake. I bought her this doll from Argos Dream Toys, I don't know what I was thinking. Not only has it got a hideous Peppa Pig outfit on, which Honey actually wants to wear, it is absolutely huge. Like nearly the same size as Honey. It's so freaky even Honey doesn't like it. In fact she really, really, really doesn't like it. It's so scary it's rammed in the bottom of a toy box and will probably never see the light of day (I did manage to bribe her with a juice for you all to see it though!)

To make up for it Bea is getting a Baby Annabel for Christmas (see bottom). They are sweet little French babies that cry and wee and do all that gross stuff, her bff has one and she goes on about Baby Annabel all the time so at least I know she'll like this one. In the mean time though, and if you're looking for any Christmas doll type presents, we do have a little baby from the ELC, which must be naked at all times, and which she sleeps with everynight, she adores it. We also have a super freaky Rapunzel styling head from the Entertainer which she can plait the hair of and paint the nails etc. See below. Warning though, do not leave it anywhere sitting up, I've nearly given myself a heart attack when walking into a room to be confronted by this staring at me.

A few months back Estee Lauder released a new formula of its best selling Advanced Night Repair, now called Advanced Night Repair Synchronised Recovery Complex II (what a mouthful!).
I'm a little late to the party with this one as I did not like the original formula at all. I wasn't keen on the smell or consistency and apart from that it didn't actually do anything for me. I used a big sample too, over about a week and still it made no difference whatsoever. So when they improved the formula and came up with the new formula I wasn't remotely interested. However after a couple of samples found themselves in my Boots bag I decided to give it a second go. And boy am I glad I did. It is amaaaaaazing. I wake up in the morning after applying this on its own the previous night and my skin looks amazing. No matter how many glasses of wine I've had or however many times the children wake up in the night my skin looks fresh and somehow smoother. It also looks hydrated and glowing, a world away from what it normally looks like. You can put moisturiser on over the top for an extra moisture boost, which I probably will do as the weather gets colder. My skin is on the dry side with the occasional spot, which it clears up, goodness knows how, so it is suited to all skin types. Anyway it is that good I will never be without it. I'm going to buy their eye cream too as I've been told by a friend it's just as good. You can buy it from Boots here.

You can get anything from red brick to wood panelling to colouring in wallpaper and personalised lettering. I personally think something with a small pattern is the most chic, that way I won't get bored of it so quickly.

I'm having huge fun browsing beautiful prints for the farmhouse we have just bought, I'm looking for something wild in the small downstairs toilet and a gorgeous colourful print for a large children's bedroom (the room being large not the child).

Here are some of my favourites, yet to be decided on, from Cath Kidston, John Lewis, Notonthehighstreet, and Rockett St George.
For anyone who knows me this won't come as big news as it's been eight months in the making but to anyone that doesn't, we bought a house! Actually it's not just any old house it's a crumbling (literally) old farmhouse on the edge of the Cotswolds (love that bit), which was in a complete state of disrepair and went through repossession and abandonment as well as a lot of time and effort to get it but I am hugely pleased to say it is now ours. It's a forever house and a complete one in a million. I know it's not everyones cup of tea, but it is ours. It's surrounded by beautiful countryside, yet five minutes from a pretty market town and twenty five minutes from two cities. Plus it's the best place ever for babies to grow up.

I have turned into an actual coffee snob. Since being converted to coffee after craving it being pregnant to my second I now can't get enough (I previously hated it that much I threw up violently on board a Boeing 747 when I was a long haul air hostess after necking a double espresso to try and stay awake during a flight to Shanghai, not good). Anyway, I say I love coffee but I am still quite fussy as to what I use my daily caffeine quota on. Firstly I love lattes or flat whites depending on the amount of hours I slept the night before and how much caffeine I need to get me through the toddler groups/ soft plays that I am en route to. Homemade instant coffee just will not do. It still reminds me of teacher breath and sends me running out of the house screaming. Starbucks is foul, too inconsistent and not pleasant tasting, I once ordered two lattes, for my husband and I, and they tasted completely different, weird. Costa is average, always a bit grubby and second-rate, Cafe Nero would be ok if I could get the buggy through the door of my local one (grrrrr) and Pret is marginally better than the lot. The Monmouth Coffee company is heavenly, shame my nearest is at Borough Market (an hour away) and the queues go round the block. However, recently Harris + Hoole popped up in Guildford and changed my expectations completely. Lovely, yummy, sweet, proper coffee, with nice staff, good snacks, a buggy park and dog friendly, Harris + Hoole is fab. Now I really didn't want to like it because it as been bought out by bloody Tesco. The only trouble is it really does do superior coffee. They serve it warm, at 60 degrees, to get the milk and coffee beans as sweet as possible, and it really does make a difference. They do kids meal boxes and the cakes etc are really good particularly the warm banana bread spread with butter or a toasted foccacia, and of course the decorate your own gingerbread man to keep the bambinos entertained.

So now, pretty much every day I drag one of the children with me to get my fix. All I need to do is log on to the app on entering and they start making my perfect coffee, it's that easy and yes I'm that lazy I don't even need to talk to anyone (actually I'm a bit embarrassed that I'm back in there again with my noisy messy children).

If you pass a Harris + Hoole check it out, but beware, you'll never be able to drink another high street coffee again.

*not a sponsored post, it may sound like it but it's purely because they just do really great coffee!

Do you have nothing else to do other than listen to me ramble on?) Anyway I have zero time to write at the moment, two children are a lot more time consuming that one might of originally thought, and as well as going on a few holidays (in the loosest sense of the word, going away with toddlers in tow is a case of same shit, different country), as well as the husband retiring from rugby, boo, taking the only laptop that I can blog from to work everyday, and the fact that I just plain fell out of love with blogging (and in love with instagram, you little time waster you), pretty much meant that I neglected Honey's Mummy for a time. Plus I have the dude now so I'm not even just Honey's Mummy, there's The Dude too (queue rebranding that I haven't had time to consider yet either). I still struggle with the balance of how much I put out there for the world to see, and how much of the children I write about, which is why I may have a hiatus every now and again. So the blog will pretty much be my likes and dislikes, places I've been that I want to share and recipes I've cooked, rather than an online journal of my thoughts and moods (never know who I may offend).

Phew, excuses excuses, anyway, now I back. Yay! Honey bug has gone back to pre-school, a lot more hours than last year, so believe it or not, there are a few random moments in the week when she's at preschool and he's snoozing and I actually have time to myself, alone, just me, super weird. I can actually finish a cup of tea, and finish a sentence, and even go for a wee, ON MY OWN. It's totes amaze. Oh I do love a flapjack. A gooey, stodgy, syrupy flapjack is sometimes better than a brownie and always far more superior and underrated in my mind to a cupcake. The only problem is recipes vary hugely, some are too floury and dry, some are too crumbly and fall apart, some go rock solid and crunchy, some are way too chewy and stick to your teeth like superglue. The even more annoying thing is I have tried so many recipes in the past from sources online that I always forget which is a good one. Anyway, here is a good one, a very good one. It has banana in (which is my idea of heaven), but any banana-phobes out there can substitute for sultanas if you so wish. So quick and easy are these scrummy little treats that I have unashamedly whipped up three batches in the last week.

I am sharing this recipe with you via the ever talented super bakers The Baking Twins, their new baking blog is here, go follow!

Ingredients
150g salted butter
75g caster sugar
4 tbsp golden syrup
250g porridge oats
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 mushed bananas

Method
Melt the butter, golden syrup and sugar in a pan
Mix in the vanilla, banana and oats
Spread into an 8inch square tin
Bake and 180 for around 20 mins
Cool in the tin then turn out onto a chopping board and chop into thick fingers

Honey is obsessed with dinosaurs, really really obsessed. Potty training involves watching Jurassic park on the iPad, (the scary T-Rex bits not the namby pamby Triceratops bits,) and any walk anywhere always ends up hunting for dinosaurs in bushes and behind trees. So a trip to The Natural History Museum has been on the cards for a while.
I haven't been for about ten years and it did not disappoint. The dinosaur section has been completely redone, the main event being a moving, roaring, giant animatronic model of a Trex at the end of a walkway, which roams over the top of huge skeletons of a Camarasaurus and a Diplodocus. Honey loved it, and we had to sneak back in to see the Trex so she could watch it's fearsome roaring until we finally dragged her away. The whole thing was hugely interactive for children with lots to see and do and despite being packed didn't seem crowded or rushed.
Another point to mention is that the museum is free entry, which is a rare thing on a family day out. We did gladly make up for this in the museum shop however. The baby changing facilities were clean, easy and always free, and there were lots of very helpful staff ready to point us to where we wanted to go. One of which pointed out that due to huge queues at the main entrance you can walk straight in round the side through the smaller Exhibition Road entrance where there is rarely ever a queue.

The whole day was a delight and I am sure we will be heading back for another dinosaur hunt again very soon.

I've recently got into crocheting, I basically wanted something easy to be able to do in front of the TV in the evening which wasn't looking at my iPhone and which I could pick up and put down. My granny had tried to teach me to knit when I was little and I hated it, so that was out and the crochet needle it was. I followed a couple of The Party Artisan's awesome tutorials on YouTube and got hooked (you can watch them and check out her other fab projects on the blog here, thank you Carolyne!) However the problem started when I decided to google ideas. Knitting has had a huge resurgence but crocheting seems to be still trailing behind in cool, and so I became swapped with rather naff, twee things I did not want to make or millions of uninspiring dated granny blankets. Now I do love granny squares but truthfully I think they may be a little out of my remit at the moment.

It was then I randomly came upon The Purl Bee. Basically the coolest knitting and crocheting blog around where I found the inspiration above. It is part of The Purl Soho, a gorgeous little shop on Broome Street in Manhattan, they do classes, patterns, beautiful yarns and buttons, the list goes on. So while I'm perfecting my double crochet and saving for some super soft Merino, whilst crocheting some multicoloured crochet balls (see below), I will be writing a list of projects to begin from the glorious Purl Bee.

If you know of any other inspiring crochet projects please let me know!
This week's recipe is a guest post which comes courtesy of the brilliant, beautiful, blonde, baking twins Rozzie and Lizzie. The twenty-two year old twins bake, a lot, from beautiful cakes, to delicious bread, yummy muffins, gooey cookies, sticky flapjacks, scrummy cupcakes, and that is just the sweet stuff. After posting the above pictures and recipe on Facebook they quickly went viral and became a Facebook phenomenon, reaching 25k shares in three days (so apologies if you have seen and tried these already). Luckily for me the girls are sharing the recipe with me, and you, too. So without further ado here it is, the best damn brownie recipe you'll ever try.....

AMAZING CADBURY'S CREME EGG BROWNIES!

185g unsalted butter
185g best dark chocolate
85g plain flour
40g cocoa powder
3 large eggs
275g golden caster sugar
6 Cadbury’s Crème eggs cut in half.

Preheat the oven to 160C and grease a 20 cm square baking tin.
Melt the butter and dark chocolate together either in the microwave or in a bowl over boiling water.
Break 3 large eggs into a large bowl and tip in 275g golden caster sugar. With an electric mixer on maximum speed, whisk the eggs and sugar until they look thick and creamy, like a milk shake. This can take 3-8 minutes. You will know it's ready when the mixture becomes really pale and about double its original volume.
Pour the cooled chocolate mixture over the eggy mousse, and then gently fold together.
Hold a sieve over the bowl of eggy chocolate mixture and sift the cocoa and flour mixture, shaking the sieve from side to side, to cover the top evenly. Gently fold in to the mixture.
Pour into the baking tin and cook for 15 minutes then take out of the oven and gently press the cadburys crème egg halves into the mix, spacing them apart evenly. Put back in the over for another 5-10 minutes.
Leave to cool before removing from tin and cutting into squares.

For the very few of you who aren't creme egg fans try substituting in oreos or a few mini eggs for the creme egg halves they are just as yummy!

When I was little I used to shamelessly make my poor mama (or god mother, or anyone else who could) plait my hair so I looked like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. In fact, so obsessed was I with said hairstyle I learnt pretty quick to do it myself. I was so good at french plaits that by the time I went to Primary School I used to have queues of girls waiting for me to braid their hair before any school swimming/ gymnastics/ play or any event. I used to endlessly plait my poor pony's mane and tail, I religiously went to Pony Club and gymkhanas for this reason alone. However by the time I turned fourteen, I noticed boys and started focusing more on Take That, the obsession with plaits ended. It just wasn't cool anymore, and my skills have stayed hidden away for fifteen years.

That is until Honey's hair became long enough for me to french plait it. Yay hooray, my inner Dorothy returned and now I can plait till my heart's content. Although I do have to bribe Honey to stay still long enough for me to actually brush her hair let alone plait it, thank goodness for Tangle Teezers.

So anyway, here she is plaited up, and looking pretty as a picture (actually the above french plait has been slept in, worn for a whole day and had a hat on it, hence the mess). In defence of my obsession they are in fact incredibly practical, when wearing bunches or a ponytail her hair falls out all over the place and her hair resembles a birds nest within the hour, but with the wondrous french plait she stays relatively neat the whole day, if you ignore the crumbs on her face and jam smeared up her cheek that is.

WARNING: Attempting a french plait on a toddler must be done with great caution, make sure neither you or they are tired or hungry and they have Mr. Tumble or some chocolate buttons for distraction, or else you will never be able to make it look anything like a plait and chasing round a screaming toddler whilst pulling their hair any which way is not the most relaxing way to start the day.honey's mummyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18108329608512050590noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2964615748524760218.post-23947725658044322392013-03-01T15:45:00.000+00:002013-03-01T15:52:08.675+00:00Seven months

My youngest turned seven months last week, so I thought it only fitting that I dedicate a little post to the sweetest boy in the world.

At seven months old you have learnt to eat real big boy food, chicken stew and porridge being the favourites. You have grown one tooth, you have learnt to sit up all on your own, and you smile all the time. When you're full of cold, or just been woken up, or been hit over the head with a giant Peppa Pig, or had your toys stolen, you still smile. You have really ticklish toes, but they don't make you laugh as much as Honey bug playing "boo" with you. You always hold your arms out by your side, that combined with your sticky-out hair makes you look like a baby penguin.

You have your mummy's hair, your mummy's nose, your daddy's eyes, your daddy's dimple under your right eye, your daddy's calm and good nature, you daddy's height and even your daddy's big toes.

My darling little dude, I struggle to conceive how I could love more than I do, yet every passing day I love you more than the day before....

My favourite spring flowers snowdrops have sprung into our tiny garden, pushing their little heads through the cold frozen earth to brighten my overgrown borders. I love them and I love this....

Snowdrop
by Alice Oswold

A pale and pining girl, head bowed, heart gnawed,
whose figure nods and shivers in a shawl
of fine white will, has suddenly appeared
in the damp woods, as mild and mute as snowfall.
She may not last. She has no strength at all,
but stoops and shakes as if she'd stood all night
on one bare foot, confiding with the moonlight.

One among several hundred clear-eyed ghosts
who get up in the cold and blink and turn
into these trembling emblems of night frosts,
she brings her burnt heart with her in an urn
of ashes, which she opens to re-mourn,
having no other outlet to express
her wild-flower sense of wounded gentleness.

Yes, she's no more now than a drop of snow
on a green stem - her name is now her calling.
Her mind is just a frozen melting glow
of water swollen to the point of falling,
which maybe has no meaning. There's no telling.
But what a beauty, what a mighty power
of patience kept intact is now in flower.

I love the beach. Sussex beaches are not like the beautiful sandy beaches of Cornwall, they are stoney, seaweedy and a little bit grey but to me they are the best. I lived a couple of miles from this beach when I was little and we used to go all year round. In the summer we would go for picnics after school, scoffing sandy sandwiches and slurping sticky lemonade, and come Winter time I would ride my horse on the beach, jumping the breakwaters and galloping along the sand in the frosty morning light.
So last week we went back to my parents for a huge roast and a brisk walk along said beach. It was freezing but both babies loved the "big water" and it made me realise how lucky I was to grow up there. This Summer we will most definitely be going back far more often....honey's mummyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18108329608512050590noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2964615748524760218.post-37118860140659809942013-02-20T14:00:00.000+00:002013-02-20T14:00:01.131+00:00Chanel Emprise

Just a quick post on my new favourite nude, Chanel's heavenly Emprise. As the sun comes out and a sprinkling of daffodils appear, I have begun to yearn for all things Spring. Gone are the festive reds and greys for my nails and out come the pretty fresh nudes. Chanel's Emprise is definitely my favourite. It is a little peachy, a touch beige, a tiny bit pink but predominantly nude. It is quite an opaque nude which I love and leaves your hands looking polished and pretty but very natural.
Apologies for the lack of posts, I have many excuses, (husband taking laptop abroad, viewing houses, a new book, snow etc etc) but in fact I have just not had the impetus. I have been super tired, six months of a baby in our room has finally taking it's toll, but he is nearly ready to go into Honey's room, hurray.

Anyway, here are a few snaps of the snow, we have loved it and luckily it hasn't caused a huge amount of disruption down in Surrey, just lots of fun and snowmen.

Hope everyone else had a great week too? Love everyone's snow pictures on Instagram.

So I have started weaning baby dude and it has been completely different second time round. As many of you know I had no clue about babies before Honey arrived, having never even changed a nappy before, which was probably why I was such an ardent Gina Ford'er. I liked having a set routine and rules, so I knew what to do, and so both of them got exactly what they needed, (not to mention both slept through from 11 weeks, but thats a different story) I digress. Anyway, being a much more confident mama second time round, weaning has been very different. First time around I followed Gina to the letter, she is very much spoon/puree led. This time round however I swatted up on The River Cottage Baby & Toddler Cookbook by Nicki Duffy and have decided to go more baby led.

The River Cottage book in my opinion is the best baby weaning book out there, and I have read a lot. It is very much a mixture of puree and baby led, which makes complete sense to me, and progresses into really good recipes for the whole family. Not only does baby led seem more natural but also so much easier as the bambino can eat elements of our supper i.e. strips of chicken and steamed vegetables, rather than having to cook different meals every evening. Yet I like the idea of giving a bit of puree too so you know they are eating something and you can measure the amount they are eating a bit more. Research shows that babyled weaning leads to much less fussy eaters in the long run too, and I have had my fair share of problems with Honey. (After eating anything up until the age of 12 months old she then decided to refuse anything bar pasta and cheese see this post.)

So anyway, after the little dude not being a huge fan of baby rice, which incidentally doesn't even exist in France so French mamas don't use it, we thought we'd offer him a few sticks of cucumber while we ate dinner, WHICH HE LOVED. He literally sucked the cucumber to death for about 20 mins. Result! So going forward I think I will go half and half puree, he loves apple, pear and cauliflower, for lunch and baby led for dinner so he can join in and watch us eat. If he prefers one over the other I'll go with that but for now that's the plan. Will keep you all posted.

Please share any baby led weaning tips and favourite foods. xx
We all know there are gorgeous toys you buy your kids for aesthetic purposes which the bambinos aren't remotely interested in, and then there are the toys you buy you little darlings that they actually like i.e. brightly coloured cartoony type monstrosities. My youngest is five months and loves nothing better than gnawing on a Little White Company fluffy penguin but other than that it is plastic, flashing, noisy toys all the way, and the toddler has a million teddies all of which sit unloved on shelves and stuffed under beds. She is very attached to a huge <strike>hideous</strike> giant Disney piglet but other than that and a couple of short love affairs with a baby Gruffalo and grubby Peppa she's not hugely fussed. Yet I keep finding more to buy them.

Lucky Boy Sunday and Maileg are both Danish design companies high up on my soft toy wish list, which are definitely the in the toys for mummies category.

Lucky Boy Sunday create beautiful, almost sinister toys, cushions and blankets which are definitely more for the mamas than bubbas. Their work magically straddles the worlds of adults and children, the everyday and the unusual, bringing a poetic, artistic sensibility to both the living room and the children’s room. I love the Mr. Bell rattle (top left), which is also machine washable, bonus. The gorgeous crochet bunting balls have even inspired to me to start crocheting, (watch this space).
I have also fallen in love with the giant bunnies, lion and pirate rattles and little mice from Maileg.

If both babies weren't spoilt as much as they were this Christmas I may just have added to their collection, for now though I'll wait till birthdays to indulge my weakness.honey's mummyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18108329608512050590noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2964615748524760218.post-789007396035459132013-01-08T13:17:00.003+00:002013-01-08T13:17:40.948+00:00A Week of Firsts

This week has charted a few milestones in our household. Firstly the little dude has gone from the basinet part of the Bugaboo into his big buggy, which may not seem that significant but to me signals the end of the newborn stage to the big bouncy baby stage, and being a bit more robust when random toys go flying at him.
Secondly the honey bug has moved into her big bed out of her cot. This is big news, she is now officially a little girl and not a baby anymore *sob*. The best thing is it went relatively smoothly, without hitch and only one night of waking up, hurrah.
Thirdly the dude has started solids. Scary crazy and now definitely not a newborn. He hated and detested his first bowl of baby rice, screamed the house down at the first spoon, yet every day since can't get enough. Even though he's only just hit the five and a half month mark I decided to wean him a little early, (so shoot me health visitor busy bodies), it was the right thing for him. Not that I need to justify it but he drains 9oz bottles left right and centre (7/6oz is recommended) and chews anything that goes past his mouth. I'm currently swotting up on baby-led weaning. More weaning posts to come, bet you can't wait :-) So any baby-led weaning advice or tips would be greatly appreciated (Honey had puree Gina Ford weaning).

So big news on the baby front for the first week or so of the year, potty training is next on the list, heaven help me! Hope everyone else has had a good start to the year. xhoney's mummyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18108329608512050590noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2964615748524760218.post-29973036350014300402013-01-07T22:18:00.001+00:002013-01-09T21:44:25.466+00:00NOTD - French Acrylic/Gelish Hybrid

Wow I haven't posted a nail of the day for around a million years. So hear is my super quick current festive hangover nail. An acrylic tipped, Gelish french covered in holographic glitter, which is actually a lot more subtle than it looks on here. It lasted for weeks and didn't chipped on bit thanks to the super strong acrylics tips, perfect for Christmas/ New Year shenanigans.honey's mummyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18108329608512050590noreply@blogger.com1
