Book of the Week - The Tiger Who Came to Tea

I LOVE the Tiger Who Came To Tea by Judith Kerr. First published in 1968, it is an old fashioned, little gem of a book, a modern classic in fact. The books perception of family life is super sweet, although a little dated (the mummy stays and home, cooks dinner and looks after the children while daddy goes out to work), but that is what's so endearing about it, and after all that is what happens in our house anyway. It is always a pleasure to read about Sophie and her mummy who sit down to cake and tea only to be interrupted by a knock at the door, by a very hungry tiger. The illustrations are as gorgeous as the story and always keep wandering little eyes transfixed.
This best seller has even been adapted for the stage, which came to Surrey a few months back but Honey was just a little too little to appreciate it.

You can buy The Tiger Who Came To Tea from most bookshops, and Liberty online here.

Any recommendations for favourite children's classics??

  1. My brother used to love this book, and it's one of the classics I bought for N as part of his starting a book library. He's not really big enough for it yet - too many words, he gets bored after a page, but hopefully in the not to distant future!

  2. I love this book. I remember my mum reading it to me when I was little. I'll have to get a copy of my own, for Willow. I have real nostalgia for anything by Shirley Hughes - particularly the My Naughty Little Sister series.

  3. We love this book too, and the family life is the same for us so R can relate.
We also love Guess How Much I Love You (Sam McBratney)and R is currently loving all of my old books from childhood - any Beatrix Potter is a big hit x

  4. my daughter loved that book- it's a classic! Not so much a classic but my daughter was obsessed w/ the Winnie the Witch books. To be honest she still loves them, she's 6 now. She's reading them now instead of having them read to her. The ones written by Valerie Thomas are the better ones. They're all illustrated by Korky Paul- he is amazing!
